Using EMLA Cream for Children’s Blood Tests
We understand blood tests can be worrying for children (and parents). To help reduce discomfort, EMLA cream may be used to numb the skin before a blood test.
This page explains what EMLA cream is, when to use it, and how to apply it correctly.
What is EMLA cream?
EMLA cream is a local anaesthetic that numbs the surface of the skin. It can help reduce pain from the needle during a blood test.
When is EMLA cream used?
EMLA cream is sometimes recommended by a clinician before a blood test for a child.
If you have been advised or prescribed EMLA cream:
-
It needs to be applied before you arrive
-
Correct timing helps it work properly
How to apply EMLA cream
Please follow these steps:
1) Choose the correct area
EMLA is usually applied to where the blood test is likely to be taken, such as:
-
The inside of the elbow, or
-
The back of the hand
If you are unsure, you can apply it to both arms (unless you have been told otherwise).
2) Apply the cream
-
Apply a thick layer of EMLA cream
-
Do not rub it in
3) Cover the area
-
Cover the cream with an occlusive dressing (for example a plaster dressing)
-
This helps the cream work properly
4) Timing
-
Apply 60 minutes before the blood test
-
Do not leave it on for more than 2 hours unless you have been specifically advised to do so
Before the blood test
-
Leave the dressing in place until your child is seen.
-
The clinician/phlebotomist will remove the dressing and clean the skin before the test.
-
The area may look pale or feel numb — this is normal.
Important safety information
Please:
-
Do not apply EMLA to broken, irritated, or infected skin
-
Do not apply near the eyes or mouth
-
Use only as advised by a healthcare professional
-
Tell the clinician if your child has had a reaction to local anaesthetics before
If your child develops a rash, swelling, or discomfort after using EMLA, remove the cream and seek medical advice.
If you have not been told to use EMLA cream
Not all blood tests require EMLA cream.
