ADHD Medication Requests Following a Private Diagnosis

ADHD Medication Requests Following a Private Diagnosis

We understand that managing ADHD can be challenging, and we are here to support you. However, we want to be clear about our practice policy regarding requests for ADHD medication after receiving a private diagnosis.

Why can’t we prescribe ADHD medication privately diagnosed elsewhere?

Our policy follows guidance from our local NHS commissioners (BOB Integrated Care Board). We can only prescribe ADHD medication in specific circumstances to ensure care is safe, appropriate, and properly monitored.

We are unable to prescribe ADHD medication initiated by a private provider unless:

  • You are under the care of an NHS ADHD service, and
  • There is a formal shared care agreement in place

Private providers are not currently part of these agreements, so we cannot take over prescribing.

Your Options

  1. Continue treatment privately
You can remain with your private provider for prescriptions and ongoing care.
  2. Request a referral to NHS services
We can refer you to the NHS ADHD service. While there may be significant waiting lists, your care will then be managed according to NHS protocols.
